University-Based Startup Aggregation in the AI Field
– Comparison between Hongo, Tokyo, Japan and Toronto, Canada –

Overview

Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo has become the core of a cluster of AI startups in Japan.

Mitsui Fudosan UTokyo Lab relational asset Working-Group will conduct a comparative study of the AI startup cluster in Hongo and Toronto, Canada, which was formed mainly by University of Toronto, and develop a project to find the key to the development of an AI cluster in Hongo.

As a kick-off to the project, we will have a panel discussion on issues for future research development, focusing on a discussion between Professor Yutaka Matsuo, a key figure in Hongo AI research, and Visiting Professor Shane Gu, a young leading AI researcher who studied at University of Toronto.

    Discussion by Professor Yutaka Matsuo, a leading AI researcher in Japan, and Visiting Professor Shane Gu, who was trained by Professor Hinton.

    Business introduction by Mr. Maruyama, Mitsui Fudosan: " Current Status of Startup Ecosystem in Hongo area" 10 min.

    Introduction of the current status of the startup ecosystem in Hongo area

  • 11:15~11:25

    Research Presentation "Key Points and Issues of Technology Clustering in the Redevelopment of Toronto" 10 minutes

    Introduction of case studies on redevelopment in Toronto.

  • 11:25~12:05

    Panel Discussion "Agglomeration through AI Research and Projects: Application and Hypothesis to Hongo" 40 minutes

    Discussion on key success factors for AI research and business in Hongo, based on case studies discussed above

  • 12:05~12:10

    Closing

Target

  • Stakeholders in general, including universities, start-ups, companies, local governments, NPOs, etc., who are practicing the creation of university-originated innovations and start-ups through industry-academia and regional cooperation, etc.
